Tonight I got the fifth axis on my tabletop mill working. The kinematics I wrote for this machine in EMC2 will allow full 5 axis machining. On a 5-axis machine, the tool orientation and the point on the workpiece are programmed separately. You can change one without changing the other. You can see in this video that the tooltip is over the workpiece (penny) which is at X1 Y1. As I move the rotary axes B and C to change the tool orientation, the tip does not move with respect to the workpiece. This requires complex compensating motion of the table and head.
