Many Bridgeports have Quick Change 30 spindles. This means the common-as-dirt NMTB 30 tool holders don't quite work. The taper is the same, but the flange is different.
I bought a drill chuck and NMTB 30 shank from ebay ($20), and modified the flange of the shank to fit my machine. The flange is a tiny bit thinner but that doesn't seem to matter since there is some allowance in the threads that tighten against it. The diameter of the flange was way too big, but that's easy (?) to fix. I attached the bench grinder to the mill table and held the shank in a collet. Then I carefully ground it down to the right diameter which seems to be 1.814-1.817 (I just measured other holders that work to find this). This little adaptation saved me $100 or more. (Later... Jeff found this link which says the proper diameter is 1.811) |
